Top 10 Places to Eat Local Cuisine in Durham

Durham has been receiving a lot of accolades in recent years because of its local food scene. Even national publications like The New York Times have recognized Durham for becoming a foodie haven.  Now that tobacco is no longer a primary crop in North Carolina, some of those tobacco fields have been converted to grow other crops. It creates a steady supply for local restaurants. If you own a home in Durham, you're lucky to have dozens of options for delicious, locally sourced food within a short driving distance.

Here are the top 10 places to eat local cuisine in Durham:

Bull City Burger and Brewery
107 East Parrish Street
Durham, NC 27701
(919) 680-2333

Enjoy a burger the way it was meant to taste. All the beef here is from local farms that raise their cattle on open pasture and do not treat them with growth hormones.  You can get a burger any way you like it so long as the ingredients are in season. In other words, don't try to add tomato to your burger in the winter.  Every March is Exotic Meat Month, and you can try burgers made of alligator meat, ostrich and more. The restaurant also makes its own beers in house, and you can see the brewery through huge panes of glass in the communal dining area.

Lilly's Pizza
810 West Peabody Street
Durham, NC 27701
(919) 797-2554

Lilly's Pizza makes some outstanding, gourmet pizza from locally sourced and organic ingredients. You can even find a list of farms that it buys from on its site.  You won't get plain pepperoni or cheese pizzas here. You'll find delicious combinations of things like porcini oil, prosciutto and shitake mushrooms. You won't find another pizza like it in the area.

Geer Street Garden
644 Foster Street
Durham, NC 27701
(919) 688-2900

Located in a former gas station, Geer Street Garden is a relative newcomer to the Durham food scene. It serves locally sourced and inspired food, like a Fried Chicken and Arugula Salad and a Grilled Pimento Cheese sandwich.  You can sit on an outdoor patio in the summer or winter, and the atmosphere is relaxed and inviting.

The Boot
2501 University Drive
Durham, NC 27707
(919) 294-8383
The owner of Geer Street Garden just opened The Boot at the end of 2014, and it serves Italian American cuisine. Here you can find the usual dishes like chicken parmesan or spaghetti and meatballs, as well as offerings like pastrami sandwiches and more.  The dining room features long, communal benches with only a few booths. It's a relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for families.

Watts Grocery
1116 Broad Street
Durham, NC 27705
(919) 416-5040
Watts Grocery aims to source as many ingredients from local farms as possible, and its menu changes seasonally. The popular restaurant serves lunch and dinner every day, a brunch on Sunday, and even a late-night menu Thursday through Saturday.  Discover gourmet cuisine like Apple Butter Pork Belly with hazelnut polenta and grilled baby bok choi or Pepper Jelly Glazed Duck Breast over sea island pea hoppin' john and sautéed Brussels sprouts.

Ninth Street Bakery
136 East Chapel Hill Street
Durham, NC 27701

Fullsteam Brewery
726 Rigsbee Avenue
Durham, NC 27701
(919) 682-2337
Technically not a restaurant, Fullsteam still lands a spot on this list because it is a well-known and loved Durham establishment. The brewery makes a variety of unique, handcrafted beers on the premises, such as a Sweet Potato Ale and a basil beer. The selection changes regularly based on what ingredients are seasonally available in the area.  Though it is a brewery, Fullsteam has a family friendly environment. Many children are often seen running around the tables.
